  1. On the results screen you can limit to journal articles by checking the box next to “Journals & Magazines” in the “Content Type” box, specify a range of publication dates, and more. When you make those selections, you’ll need to click the “Apply Refinements” button for them to take effect.
  2. To read an abstract, or summary, of an article on your results list, click on the title or on the “Abstract” link.
  3. Most content has full text available by clicking the PDF link at the bottom of each citation. If the icon of a lock is locked, you’ll need to click the yellow “Find It” button to check for the full text in other databases.

Searching for Articles

  1. Uncheck the boxes next to “Ei Backfile” and “GEOBASE” to search only in Compendex.
  2. Type your topic into the search bar. For the ethics in engineering assignment, you might want to try entering this: ethic*. The * at the end tells the database to search for any form of the word ethic, for example, ethics or ethical.

The image below shows these steps:

  1. On your results page, use the menu on the left side of the screen to narrow your list of results. Options to consider:
    • English language only
    • Specify “Journal Article” under “Document Type.”
    • Look at “Controlled Vocabulary” to see a list of terms related to your search and check the ones that most closely match what you are looking for.
    • Under “Year,” limit to recent publications.
    • Click the “Limit to” button at the top of the column to throw out any of the items in your results list that do not meet the criteria you selected.
    • If your results list is still too large, you can add additional keywords in the “Add a term” text box. This tells the database that you want articles that meet all the previous criteria and also include the new term you entered.

Finding Full Text

  1. When you have a manageable results list, click the “Show preview” link underneath an entry to see an abstract, or  summary, of the article.
  2. After reading the abstract, if you want the entire article, or full text, click the yellow “Find It” button. This opens a new tab with a link to the full text of the article if it is available. If the new tab says NO FULL TEXT AVAILABLE but you still want the article, contact a your librarian. We can help you get copy another way.
